WHAT ARE VENEERS?

Veneers are a porcelain covering applied to the surface of the tooth that is visible to others. They can eliminate intrinsic (within the tooth) staining like fluorosis or tetracycline stain, repair chipped or damaged teeth, and even correct minor misalignment issues. They are custom crafted from high-quality porcelain to suit your individual smile.

THE PROCESS

The process usually requires three appointments at our dental office. The first appointment is your smile consultation, where Dr. Gaultier will discuss with you if veneers are possible for the smile you desire.

Depending on the difficulty of the case, records may be taken and an additional “mock-up” or try-in appointment may be needed to help to envision your desired result. To ensure the most realistic color match, we may also send you to our local laboratory for custom shading.

The next appointment involves preparing the teeth by carefully shaping them to fit underneath the veneers. Impressions of the prepared teeth are taken and sent to the lab. Temporaries are placed on the teeth while the veneers are being made, a process that usually takes about a week or so.

The last appointment involves removing the temporaries and trying the veneers in. If everyone is happy with the shape, color, and fit, they’re permanently bonded in place.

MAINTAINING YOUR NEW SMILE

The lifespan of veneers varies greatly depending on habits, wear, and oral hygiene. If you grind your teeth, a nightguard or splint will help to protect them from early wear. Avoid using teeth for things other than chewing. Nail biting, opening packages, and holding things in the teeth is never a good idea. An occlusal splint is a wise investment to protect the veneers, as well as a mouthguard if you play contact sports.
