What is Sedation and how is it used in Dentistry?

Sedation refers to the administration of a variety of medications and techniques meant to help patients feel at ease and relaxed during dental procedures. From children to adults, it is estimated that over half present some kind of anxiety or fear during a visit to the dentist.
Sedation is also used to help people with a low pain threshold, though not everyone applies as we evaluate each patient’s needs and health requirements carefully.

Nitrous Oxide Sedation

Commonly known as “laughing gas”, Nitrous Oxide is an inhaled gas and one of the most
frequently used forms of sedation in dentistry. Its popularity is attributed to the effectiveness that comes from its calming effect, ease of use and the ability for patients to remain awake. This allows dentists to work faster and for longer periods of time as well.

Nitrous Oxide is very effective and regarded as being extremely safe, its calming effect goes away quite quickly so you can resume your daily activities some time after your procedure. This type of sedation can be used for children who are going to the dentist for the first time. Nitrous Oxide helps them get accustomed to regular visits to the dentist which goes a long way into their dental health over the course of their entire life.

We’re aware that Nitrous Oxide is very attractive amongst parents and many people looking to get dental work, keep in mind though, you will need a preliminary visit with us to determine if you’re eligible for Nitrous Oxide.
